The rather unique upright form of a typical mid-19th century writer's chest, compendium, cabinet or 'slope', this stunning box has retained its original beauty and form, but needs replacement inkwells. Still complete with the working lock and original key with 19th century bouillon passementerie tassel, it is a marvel of marquetry with brass stringing accenting the contrasts of fine kingwood. The heavy brass pencil edging outlines and accents the form which includes serpentine lines. Open, you see the original velvet writing surface or 'slope', and note and stationery storage rising behind it. All in place and beautifully preserved for age (c.1850-70). More compact than most of these, it's nearly 11" across but since it takes vertical form over horizontal, it takes up less surface space, will fit on a shel as well as a desktop or table. Very good to excellent condition throughout, a true work of art by the ebenistes or cabinetry makers of France. Thick hardwood with opulent kingwood veneer, there are no chips or cracks, no losses. All of the brass stringing firmly in place, and nothing missing at all of the brass stringing compliment on slope front, or the edge trim. No warp, no flaws notable other than that original inkwells (2) no longer are with the chest. All hinges and hardware in fine form, as well. Just exceptional in all ways.
