What an opulent little box this is. A snuff perhaps, or patch or pill box, it's the art work on top that most interests me. This is a remarkably little acid-etching of the original 1700s painting, The Milkmaid, by Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1743-1784). The large original painting of this scened hangs in the Louvre, Paris. We've had it in miniature paintings done for the 19th century Grand Tour trade, but I've never seen it treated in this manner. Perfect little box to hold your overnight jewelry at bedside (I use something similar when I travel), or just to display with your collections. This one is probably about the right size to use as a dressing table powder jar for your Bru and other antique doll's settings, too. A small work of art all on its own, but also captures the work of one of France's finest 1700s artists. Look online to see the original of Greuze's Milkmaid, and you'll agree this little production of it is a masterpiece.
Very good condition for age and type. A 19th century box that has survived without damage. The silver panel is beautiful against the brilliant high gold finish of the brass alloy. It is not sterling silver nor vermeil, and bears no maker mark or hallmarks. Measurements noted on photos.
