Hand carved, hand made down to the carved bone (see the striations typical of bone) dice or playing cards made into the lid. This would have been a prisoner of war item, and the bone chips might have initially been part of a game, then worked into the hinged lid of this gorgeous boot. Dating early 1800s, no doubt. A little different than the more refined ones we also have in inventory, and which you'll also want to see (sold separately). Large and impressive, it's a table snuff and not a pocket snuff size. Full measurements noted on the photos, but it's 6" long, 2" widest and 3" high, closed.
Very good to excellent for age and type. Some small dents to the brass upper rim consistent with age and use. There are no breaks on the bone chips, and there are 3 in total making up the lid of the snuff box. No odors, we've cleaned it and given the old wood a light wax to preserve that beautiful patina.
