A wonderful and oversized hand carved Swiss Black Forest hunt scene pocket watch stand, late 1800s, just in from France and ready to display your own pocket watch. The recess is measured at 2" diameter, and the outer frame adds even more generous room for your full-sized antique pocket watch. My family had an heirloom silver one with inlaid 18k figure of an elk on the backside, nearly worn off from constant use by my great-grandfather, a Swiss immigrant. I so wish I had that beautiful family treasure, and I'd keep this to display it. This would be perfect. But my loss is your gain.
Very good to excellent for age and type, with only the tip of upper greenery chipped (left it without stain so you'd see it easily - it will improve immensely by coloration, only), and the tips of both curved horns show a little loss. Nothing else at all, and both ears and legs are fully intact, which is quite rare on the slender carved parts. Entirely hand carved from a single piece of wood, the anatomical beauty shows it the work of a master carver. No signature, though. These were often taken home as souvenirs of the famed Grand Tour, but also graced many homes in Switzerland and the region. Animalier era hunt scene, forest scene, perfect for cabin, lodge, or your own fine home. Twice as large as others we've had. Quite impressive, indeed!
