Beautifully carved c.1800s Black Forest hand carved large jewelry box in oval form, probably the largest oval one we've found. A mating dance going on up top, are they pheasants or another type fo bird? Long tail feathers, intact, wings out and beautiful. The carved decoration on the oval rims is superb, and it is raised on 4 brass feet. Interior is ready for a new lining, would likely have had an old silk satin, though there is some black paper along bottom, so perhaps paper-lined. The old wood is beautiful, and you might just wish to remove the balance of paper and leave it bare but polished wood grain within. Full measurements are noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition throughout, age and type considered. Caskets like this normally are missing big chunks of tail, or wings, or the legs have broken. This one is not perfect, but it is quite close. I have marked any areas for your review. The upper bird has had a restoration at the neck, a couple of leaf tips have been lost to the ages, but legs, beaks, wings and tails are largely unscathed. Larger than most of the old oval ones, it's a very impressive piece, indeed.
