A magnificent work of carver's/sculptor's art, this 19th century glove box (typical elongated size dictates it's original use) is a full 14 1/4" long with those cabriole legs. On our photos you'll also see measurements for the body of the box and the interior, but it's huge and huge on appeal. A masterpiece of the old Black Forest carver's work and so beautifully preserved. Those are 3 bunnies up top. The one whose ears remain intact confirms they all 3 once had small but definitely rabbit ears. Small and pointy, the very upper ones have been chipped. Those are the only chips or imperfections I have found, however, and the anatomical excellence, the charm and the very elevated quality affirm its quality. Notations found on bottom may give hint to the artist though I don't see a carved name to report. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition throughout, even considering age and type - just the nipped tips of the bunny ears at top as a reportable flaw. The fabulous forest plants and those outsized and elegant cabriole legs - not a chip nor crack. No warp to the old wood, so it's also seasoned as a Master carver would insist upon. Lots of photos to review. Very clean (now) and has undergone a very light beeswax to help preserve the old wood for centuries ahead. The interior is the old original silk velvet lining, and you can see the area of lost nap, just where the right-handed first owner would have rubbed his fingers as he reached in to retrieve a pair of gloves. It is, as noted above, a gloves box or was in its origin. Splendid sculpture for any use or just for display now!
