Not really 'boulle', but rich with intricate and opulent inlays, brass and mother of pearl, the primary exotic wood veneers used is Kingwood, the strong straight grain and tones beautifully enhanced with the inlays, the heavy brass pencil edging trim and the blackened wood accents. Large at almost 14" long, it comes through the 150 or so years since creation in superb form. Lift-top and hinged-forward style, it creates a storage chest for stationery, pens, etc., but also an angled writing surface - often called a lap desk. Full measurements noted on the photos.

Very good to excellent condition throughout, including the original pair of brass-capped glass inkwells and the pen tray cover. Hardware and chest of such high quality, one expects an engraved lock plate declaring it a TAHAN, Vervelle, P. Sormani - one of the top makers of 19th century items like this. There are no chips, no losses of veneer, no lifts to inlays, no missing pencil edging brass trim - the old lock is working and does come with original key (note that part of the oval key handle is broken away, making it almost look like a sliver moon). The original silk velvet writing surface is still in place, and it shows the age of the set. Some will want to replace it (you can order sized embossed split leather replacements) but all antiques retain value best without replacements. A paper etiquette on bottom reads, "Alice".
