Beautiful & rare antique Whiting Gorham sterling silver 8 3/4" bread, fruit or serving bowl with spectacular "Violet" pattern floral repousse & scrolling 'MBW' monogram! Bearing the old Whiting hallmarks on the bottom so this is before the Whiting company was absorbed into Gorham, the date mark place its manufacture to 1908. As visually pleasing as they come, the dish has a scalloped shape and the rim is completely encircled by flowers, foliage & scrolls in deep relief or repousse! Perfect as a decorative piece or, add to your existing fine sterling silver ensemble!
Whiting Mfg. Co. of New York traces its roots back to 1840 with the firm of Tifft & Whiting in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. After a series of partnership changes, the firm incorporated as the Whiting Manufacturing Company in 1866. The firm was a major manufacturer of both sterling hollowware and sterling flatware. Date marks were only used from 1905 to 1924, when Whiting was purchased by the Gorham company.
