In a slightly folk art style, and with faces only 1/2" from chin to hairline, the couple's portraits are each works of art. They survive from the King Louis XV to XVI Era, time of Marie-Antoionette, and show fashions of that era. He boasts a French medal on his chest. A bit of ID and history is written on paper on back, some of it obliterated by moisture or soaking adhesive from being attached on the frame's back, but dates c. 1761 - 1785 are included in the notations, as is 1720. I can see a name but can't fully make it out and will leave further research to the next owner. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, over 250 years old now, they would have talked about the American Revolutions, and lived through the French Revolution, although we do not know their fate. The frames remain nicely preserved, cover glass is clean and paintings are undamaged. Signs of age, yes, and those very tempting papers on back which await deciphering and research.
