A rather unique pair of portrait plaques, entirely hand carved in wood, with what is sure to have been decorative memorial figures rather than life-portraits, since I believe these were carved in late 1800s, and the style of the figures dates a century earlier to the French Romantic Era, c.1770s or so. So a decorative pair, meant to be part of a wall of paneling, perhaps, in their earliest placement. But wonderful now to just hang and enjoy as the sculptures they are. A man and woman, facing or opposite, and likewise for the garland of roses carved to frame them.
Very good to excellent condition, they present without cracks, hairlines, chips of note and have the little hanging loops taped to backs to make that a simple choice, or you can hand to your liking in another manner. The plaques are entirely hand carved. They are each approximately 11.5" x 8.5" oval and 1.25" in depth. A deep bas relief carving. Beautiful craftsmanship! Just in from France.
