An outstanding portrait miniature that tells such a story. This young girl, we know from history, is a child of or perhaps grandchild of someone whose fate in late 1700s "The Terror" was to have been beheaded. In honor or perhaps even as a bold protest, women cut their hair in this 'guillotine' (also called Titus) hairstyle. Her deep blue eyes fairly stare down the artist in this post. We often see symbolism in portraits from the Revolution through Restoration which are rich with protest symbolism, like the addition of a certain type of flower. The history is SO interesting. This child also wears the traditional talisman, red coral, both her earrings and a lavaliere at her bodice. Red coral was thought to have protective qualities, particularly toward the virtue of young girls. Also, traditionally, representative of the solidified blood of Medusa upon her slaying. Innocence of youth, fiercely protesting the loss of her progenitor to the blade, she dates between 1797 and 1810. More than 200 years ago, this beauty lived a life.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. No chips nor cracks in the wafer upon which her portrait in painted in gouache or watercolor. The locket-style hinged frame acid tests 10k gold and is in very good condition, a coiled bale up top for hanging or for a chain. She's only 2.5" in diameter, so lovely as jewelry, too. There is writing on the backside, but it has faded to the point it is impossible to read. Superb little bit of history, this. Measurements noted on photos. Cover glass is original, and I did clean it before putting her back together. The locket frame is hinged and opens with a slim blade and some care. Closes thus, as well. It is less than 1/4" in depth.
