Artist: Jean-Françoise Gigoux of Besançon, France (1806-1894) French painter, lithographer. Read more about him on the British Museum site. Known for stunningly lifelike and expressive portraits, elegant compositions. Much sought after in his time. This work is watercolor and pastel on paper. Framed nicely, one corner chipped (view images)

Subject: (Paul) Sauzet, (Lyon 1800-1876), accomplished orator and avocate (attorney) who at age 27 (the time of this portrait) was installed in the Chamber of Deputies, which he later served as President. Brilliant, he received a bachelor's degree at 15, and was sent to the School of Law, Paris. His political career began in 1827 and ended in 1848's February Revolution. Afterward, offered a  position in the Royal Court of Paris, he refused.  When he sat for this portrait at just 27 years of age, he was lauded for his singularly brilliant ability at discourse, clarity of expression, lively speech and ability to improvise - all exceptional for his position.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. C.1827, the painting protected under glass, it has no damage, loss, flaws to note. One corner of this original frame has had a chip, visible in our photos. Measurements in full noted on the photos. This is considered a miniature portrait.
