A magnificent example of why we all are in love with 200+ year old French Palais Royal sewing boxes, sets, 'necessaire' - this one has survived remarkably well and has all original tools but 1 (scent bottle, which is replacement from that era, c.1810). There are 15 tools and implements, total, and 6 of them bear the coveted 18k gold medallion with kiln-fired enamel flowers. Other trim in the set is also 18k gold, and the old mother of pearl items are beautifully preserved. All 4 silk winders are original, only 1 has a small loss (see images). Spools, folding pocket knife, crochet tambour (there is not a hook inside the handle, however). Splendid interior of pale pink satin is silk and original, complete with the pad to protect the tools and mirror. Larger sized coffret, casket, box is nearly 9" long. Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Palais Royal splendor, this! First purchased among the elegant and opulent boutiques of the old Cardinal Richelieu Palace, the best objects mankind could conceive of were to be found there. The rich burl wood veneer of the box is without loss, perhaps a small roughness at a corner but no chips. Raised on 4 gold ball feet, the engraved mother of pearl cartouche and escutcheons remain in place. A working lock and original key complete this museum quality set. Lots of photos show it well. I'll have my eye out for a period scent bottle which will better fill the fitting, too. As of listing, it is as shown.
