From my own collection: A hand painted miniature portrait perfectly preserved under that convex original cover glass on this astounding 4" diameter ivory table snuff, or, more likely, a powder jar, and it's signed by the artist, as well. Late 1700s to early 1800s, likely, and perhaps done after a more famous artist's painting, made up as an item to tempt the Grand Tour traveler of earliest 1800s to take home a souvenir. That's what some of these are. And others are one of a kind personal portraits of persons living at the time. I think this one is the later, however, as it depicts fashions of an earlier era. The gown and hair style would suggest this is someone from the Georgian era, and while signature won't prove it, it might be either French or English in origin. I do not immediately recognize it as an earlier portrait after, say, Reynolds, or Gainsborough or other artists in portraiture, which is sometimes done. If you recognize this one, email me, please. But in any case, it is a fine painting of a beautiful young woman of mid-late 1700s fashion, well preserved. An age crack in the very old box, visible in our images. Striations on bottom show it to be bone (long striation). Otherwise we have not tested this item. The thing we are most interested in and are selling here is the fine miniature painting, however.

Very good condition for age and type, no damage to the painting, none to the convex cover glass protecting it. No warp to painting wafer, either. Signed by artist, J. Beale (unsure of that name being either French or English, likely). Large table snuff, one hairline of age, one crack as well, same, on lid. Bottom rather unscathed by time. Fits smoothly, closes and holds together without warp or malfunction of any type. A fabulous old one.

IMPORTANT NOTE regarding antique tortoise shell or ivory: We are great supporters of protection for endangered species in our modern world. We never buy or sell anything 100 years or newer; we donate to anti-poaching organizations; we don't hunt; we conserve in ways that impact global warming (we're totally solar at home), knowing those measures also protect the animals in the wild today. We also recognize the vast cultural history we preserve with our care and reverence for these antique objects, and agree with CITES that objects over 100 years of age have nothing whatsoever to do with species depletion in our current world.

Our offering exceeds the age limitation of "more than 100 years of age", and is well within the exemption for CITES regulation. If imported, met the CITES regulation. This item will be handled and shipped from our Utah business, and is not available for shipment internationally, nor within the USA to California, NY, Nevada, Hawaii, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington if it contains ivory, sorry. Please see our small print for more details.
