A fabulous late 1700s French vest pocket vanity set, complete with the original fitted implements to include: sterling silver spoon and pocket knife and bodkin/ear wax spoon; a pencil and note/measuring too, and a 2nd threading needle, a button hook that folds. The outer case is in remarkably fine condition for its age, being well over 225 years, and has only one line of separation at the seam on backside of the lid, owing to shrinkage of the old stingray leather. The distinctive round scales that confirm it as shagreen are large, wonderful. I've tried hard to capture the marks on the old sterling silver. There are a couple of very tiny punch marks on the handle of the knife, and also a key-like ornament and a silver mark on the handle of the spoon. Rare to find one of these that is complete.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Noted above, all of the implements are with the set, original and without any loss or damage apart from light push or scrape on the handle of the old folding pocket knife. The glade shows some corrosion, typical of early steel blades but not bad. A superb set. The measurements are noted on the photos. It is 3.5" long, 1.5" widest and .5" thick.
