Signed by the artist, Dalgoutte, and dated also c.1847 in the artist's hand, this beautiful small interior study pictures a gentleman dressed as a hunter of a century or more earlier, I think, and his 2 hunting hounds at his feet. Intimate, beautifully done. Gilded bevel on a hand-cut mat, which also has the hand lettered repeat of the artist's name on the broad balance. Nicely preserved and in the old original frame. The theme and treatment also suggest the artist was working in the "Orientalism" manner somewhat, with subjects going back in time, often with hunting or sporting theme. Beautiful small painting! I'm unable to find (quick search) a listed French artist by this name so do not have more on the artist, sadly.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, the frame shows its age and some wear, as you can see. The original cover glass is laid glass, has waves visible in it on angle of view to light. The very pleasing composition and accomplishment of this intimate water color miniature makes it extra appealing, and no damage to the painting at all. Size almost begs to be art work in a Bru or antique doll's house, yes? Or certainly with portrait miniatures clustered around it. Measurements: Outer frame is 10" x 7.5" and it is .5" thick. The watercolor is 5.75" x 4 3/8" (aperture in mat).
