Exceptional antique American brilliant cut crystal & sterling silver 4.5" inkwell with absolutely gorgeous wheel cut & etched or engraved Art Nouveau style floral decoration, convex pen tray in the front and "Effie" inscription or dedication on the lid! Hard to photograph to get all of the beauty of the engraved decoration but as beautiful as they come! The lid itself a bit plain but then the inscription is the charm there, makes you wonder who Effie was :), yes? This one simply marked "sterling" so we're sure it's American, something is engraved in the silver just below and to the right of the marking but I can't make it out. The crystal or glass portion with an etched "Sinclaire" on the back just below the silver collar for H.P. Sinclaire & Co., New York. Here's a little info found online: When H. P. Sinclaire, Jr. opened his cutting shop in Corning, NY in 1904 the business was well-positioned to become a successful enterprise, not least because American cut glass had reached the apex of its popularity at about this time. But other factors also predicted a successful future, factors that centered on H.P. himself. The man, personable and good-looking, had an excellent, although informal, liberal arts education through use of his fatherâs extensive personal library. More formally, he received practical training at the Rochester (NY) Business Institute, training that enabled him to assume the title of book-keeper at Hawkes Rich Cut Glass Works in 1883. At this company he was trained in all aspects of glass-making by T. G. Hawkes himself, and eventually he assumed increased responsibility in the management of the company. H. P.'s artistic ability, evident from an early age, was encouraged at the Hawkes company where he designed the engraved glass that the company displayed at the Paris Exposition in 1889.
Very good condition. There are a few tiny nips but no larger chips, no cracks or other damage to note. No dents or damage to the sterling top other than a slight downward bend to that front finger flange. See pictures for measurements.
