Raised on wonderful cast bronze paw feet, the true elevation though is the fabulous cut-away carving that reveals many animals in the 4 sides and the top of this 14.5" long jewelry or gloves or documents box. Look at them all. A stag, following a hare, is chased by a hound on the lid; along the front panel we see a chicken, fox, gird and hare which is repeated on the back long panel. And on the 2 sides, birds in flight. The way this one is made is quite unique, and the quality is evident throughout, particularly also on the four sides or corner ornamentation, flared worked wood base, as well as the carvings. The base wood box is pine, I think - is it? And the stained thinner panels of cut-away bas-relief sculpted animals and forest is overlaid on that lighter wood for a very nice look overall. Truly, it's nicer than our photos would tell you.
Very good to excellent, I see not a single chip, though perhaps there is a small panel of vine missing above the one hound (look closely) We'd date this one c. 1870-1900, and the size makes us think it is a deeds or document box. Possibly once housed a marriage contract certificate or deed - great now as a charming desktop box.
