"Apres" or After the original work by Jean-Baptiste Greuze (French, 1725 - 1805) Oil on linen canvas, original wood stretchers: 22" x 18", unframed. Ours painted in early 1800s Greuze's original was painted in 1761: "The Laundress (La Blanchisseuse)" Our painting offered here is spectacular, of importance in that it is a fine copy of the painting which hangs in the Louvre, Paris. In the early days of the Louvre, as now, artists were welcome to set up easel and proceed to paint the paintings. This was both an educational and also a patron-driven practice, as there was much demand for the famed artists' work. These artists often worked in miniature for the Grand Tour trades, but this is a larger than life copy. The original is only 15.98" x 12.87", a good deal smaller than the gorgeous painting we offer here. Our painting is very beautifully accomplished, as you can see. It displays with such charm, presence, it's been in my own home for a long time. No, the lack of a frame never keeps me from hanging art. Our painting's outer measurement as you see it is 22" x 18". Would be stunning in the proper frame.
Very good to excellent for age and type. This painting is superb. It is close to perfect, but it does have a little oil paint missing on her hands (see our detail images). Likewise, if held to light, you can see very fine light shows through the old linen, though they're not flaws, just the painting as it's done. There are no current visible rips, holes or tears and as you can see from back of canvas, a single smallish restoration to be noted. On the painting's face, that spot would be somewhere in her bunched up skirt and it is so well done, it's really not showing from front. A superb subject, elegantly copied here. Yes, it's a mirror-image or flipped view of the original. That suggests the artist used the drafting aid of a mirror-device to transfer lines to the new canvas, inverting the orientation of the young woman to facing right rather than left as the composition of the original places her.
