A glimpse in time, the elaborate fashion of gown and hairstyle you see here puts her directly into 1830s, as late as Louis Philippe's reign in France. A spectacularly beautiful young woman, and the artist so adept as to capture her perfectly in this small format. The gouache painting on thin natural wafer is exceptional! And yet our artist did not sign the work. She is bright, light reflecting through that thin wafer due to the original silver foil panel placed behind her (see images). An exquisite miniature, her face is only 3/4", chin to hairline, and yet look at the work.
Very good to excellent condition throughout on this fine portrait. She is housed in the original brass frame, under the original slightly convex cover glass. Rare to find the foil behind, which helps to bounce light back up through the thin wafer and brighten her face and white of her lace collar. Measurements noted on our photos. She is from my personal collection of over 35 years, being disbursed now. Don't miss her.
