Beautifully hand carved of a solid piece of old hardwood, this putti, or infant or perhaps Cupid rests in recline. I'm unsure if it's an Italian or French or ? carving, really. The old wood is obviously 19th century or earlier, as is the antique frame. A very appealing carved work of bas relief sculpture you'll enjoy seeing over and over, whether in a child's nursery or just among your wall-hung or shelf-displayed art. I think I recognize this figure as one after or "apres" a painting done by Ruebens, but I'm not positive of that. If you recognize it right off, let us know and we'll confirm. The full measurements are noted on the images: 18.5" x 15.5" oval outer frame measurements, and it's more than 1.5" in depth with the carving. The inner oval carved wood plaque alone measures 13 3/4" x 10 5/8"..
Very good condition for age and type. The carved panel is fabulous, and the antique frame seems to be original to it. It shows some age and a little damage which can be seen in our clear large photos for your review. Also note that there is a little warp to it. It's not so noticeable when hung or shelf/easel displayed, but when lying on a flat surface you can see it. I've shown it from both sides in our images so you can see.
