Elegant antique French Napoleon III era (c.1860-90) ébéniste's glove or documents box, (can double as a work box, table box or jewelry chest) in elegant Kingwood marquetry style veneers and with a lovely Sevres hand painted porcelain medallion or cartouche mounted in the lid! The ebeniste/ebaniste (cabinetry workers) of 19th century France created some of the most outstanding and opulent boxes of any century before or since. These are why I have been a box collector my entire antiques-dealing career. The first antique item I bought for myself was a box, in England, as a graduate student. I still have it. It was simple, nothing grand like this one. But they always hold a promise of some treasure or other within. They beg to be opened, don't they. And things tucked in that are a thrill to discover only increases one's pleasure in owning them. Table boxes such as this one are perfect for desktop or coffee table, buffet or side table. Whether for your needlework, your jewelry, your ribbon-bound stack of love or heritage letters - this one will fill the bill in any form. A working lock and the original working key for it at listing time. You an lock your letters (or gloves) away if you wanted to.

Very good condition for age and type. The box is nice sized at 10.5" x 4.25" and is 3.25" tall when closed. There is a small veneer split on the right side, bottom near the front hinged panel, and a small veneer crack on the left side (upper rear corner area). Two small holes on the front hinged panel, one at each side where there may have been a tack type accent? A hinged drop front so one could easily choose the right pair of gloves, it is a gloves box. Perfect now for a marriage certificate or deed, perhaps.
