The monogram is PHY, and it and the crown above it are cast in 18k solid yellow gold (acid tested). The body of the minaudiere is blond shell - beautiful throughout and even in coloration. Quality evident all through, as well. The clasp and hinge are plated brass, look like 18k gold but do not test as such. Nice larger clutch size, this one is perfect to be used as an evening purse. Covered compartments within can double as space for a credit card or two & some cash; house or car key (if your car requires a key) and whatever else you might find essential for an evening. originally would have had a powder screen and puff in that larger compartment and similar in at least one small compartment for rouge, and perhaps a lipstick for that longish open space.
Very good for age and type, there is evidence of age or mishandling on the one side panel, and I've marked it and we've tried to show the hairlines in the shell by marking with 'x' on our images. It isn't broken, but there is a flashing-type hairline along this area. Cover lids on interior are all 3 in fine order and without warping or damage. The mirror is the old original and there is a little loss to the silvering at perimeter, primarily at the 3 o'clock position, which is quite often true of these old ones. These usually were made with a suede leather scabbard of sorts into which the minaudiere fit and which had a long handle to use as a purse or shoulder bag. This one does not have a scabbard if it ever did have one. We do have another one or two in inventory and at least one has the original scabbard. Ask us if you wish to see that one. But this is the only one we've seen in blond shell, and has the added plus of having been, well, Royal. Let us know if you figure out the Royal to which those initials fit and we'll add to our info.

IMPORTANT NOTE regarding antique tortoise shell or ivory: We are great supporters of protection for endangered species in our modern world. We never buy or sell anything 100 years or newer; we donate to anti-poaching organizations; we don't hunt; we conserve in ways that impact global warming (we're totally solar at home), knowing those measures also protect the animals in the wild today. We also recognize the vast cultural history we preserve with our care and reverence for these antique objects, and agree with CITES that objects over 100 years of age have nothing whatsoever to do with species depletion in our current world. We do hold a USDFW import/export license, as well.
Our offering exceeds the age limitation of "more than 100 years of age", and is well within the exemption for CITES regulation. If imported, met the CITES regulation. This item will be handled and shipped from our Utah business, and is not available for shipment internationally, nor within the USA to California, NY, Nevada, Hawaii, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington if it contains ivory, sorry. Please see our small print for more details.
