TAHAN, the most respected and lauded name in 19th century French cabinetry makers, elevating the form and achieving all awards possible. Eventually the firm also became a very successful purveyor of a broad variety of luxury goods, not unlike Tiffany in the USA, some 50 years on. The name has such cachet, that signature lock plate you see is highly sought after by collectors and dealers, and represents the pinnacle of quality. This cut-cornered rectangular box with its opulent veneers of ebony and burled hardwoods, accented in brass stringing, superb brass pencil edging and with a boulle-worked large cartouche, is a fine c.1850 TAHAN, PARIS jewelry box. We are proud to offer it!
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, the interior is the old original silk, showing age as these do. The old working lock with that TAHAN engraved lock plate, has its original working key (rare!). And while none of the opulent stringing is missing, you can see it has a small lift at one angled corner, and a little veneer disruption there, and again on the opposite side. We've shown those 2 spots in enlarged detail for your review. Most often, these boxes will be missing at least a strip of stringing, edging, or more. This 170+ year old beauty is truly a treasure.
