Signed by listed artist, G. CORBIER, Gaston Corbier (1860-1945, French), whose work comes to major auction houses and is held in museum and private collections. An earlier work from this artist, and his later works move to landscapes and floral still life, mostly. This is a fine example of the Nature Morte genre, a still life representing the humble preparations for the evening meal. The birds are slightly smaller than life-size - a humble meal, indeed. This one dates c.1885-1900, and is an exceptional little work of art. Most often hung without a frame, as this one presents, or resting on a shelf or against a cabinet or bookcase, these are oil paining directly on a panel of wood, a bit of a Trompe l'oeil, with the 3 birds hanging from a painted string on a painted nail. These are not hunting or trophy paintings, but are, instead, like little prayers of thankfulness for Nature's bounty in providing the next meal. Humble in their time, and hard to find now - a favorite subject for me. This one is superb!
Very good to excellent condition, no cracks nor breaks or chips to the 1/4" thick wood plaque upon which the artist has painted the birds. Fine composition, elegant treatment of a sensitive heartfelt subject, and a beautiful palette. These were often the best of an artist's work, having the devotional or prayerful humility and grace. This one shows a little line, top and bottom, indicating it might have once been in a frame. No such mark on sides, though. Artist signature bottom left. There are a handful of woodworm holes visible from back, though not from front. Nothing active at all - over 100 years old. Measurements are noted on the photos. No disruption to the painting, itself.
