I have 4 of these in my home in the mountains. I absolutely love this genre, which the French refer to as "nature morte". Quite typical as a kitchen or dining room subject, it isn't so much a hunt theme, but is more like a prayer of thanks for the bounty of the day's meal. Always a table setting still life, usually includes pots for cooking, vegetables and meat or birds before prep. Sometimes the dead birds or animals are hanging by a string. A very direct connection to Nature and our place in it, well before the supermarket convinced us we don't hunt, we don't kill to sustain life. The colors in this one are superb, and the composition if rich. Signed by artist, "Dubois", we know nothing more about this artist. So often this type of painting hung without a frame in a simple home, kitchen wall. This one is in a thick heavy antique wood frame which is shown from front and back. Very thick, it is 22" x 18.5", exterior measurement. All measurements are noted on our photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, the painting is in oil on stretched linen canvas. The old stretcher frame is shown from backside for your review. Also the canvas so you can see there are no restorations. Still nicely stretched and preserved. Frame is very appealing, indeed. By frame and stretcher, we'd date it last half 1800s. These are splendid in a home where Black Forest is well-appreciated, by the way. Natural themes, cabin, lodge, or just the appreciative kitchen, any decor.
