Elegant antique French Napoleon III era Palais Royal style 3.75" shimmering mother of pearl & gilt bronze ormolu 'vide poche', bonbon, open salt or jewelry trinket dish with ornate foliage & floral accents and delicate metal tassels! The old French "vide poche", which was a requisite item in all well-appointed homes, a bedroom item into which the pocket watch, jewelry or things of the pockets were deposited at bedside for the night. The term "vide poche" means "empty pockets", and thus is likely the origin of this type of piece. The base with floral accents and scrolls, the rim of the pearl dish in a frieze style floral garland print with those wonderful little tassels. Lovely!
Very good condition. There are quite a few missing tassels and a few that are broken. No chips or cracks to the mother of pearl shell other than one tiny rim nip near the middle of one longer side. No damage that I can se to any of the framework either but the base is somewhat delicate in just that thin pressed ormolu. See pictures for all measurements.
