Rare antique 19th century French Napoleon III Palais Royal style travel or dressing case, an opulent rich emerald green leather necessaire or valise with Minerva hallmarked sterling silver topped cut crystal jars, carved horn brushes and more, more, more! Isn't this beautiful! And in such fine pristine condition, it must have never gotten much use. We have had a couple of these over time, and the last one was stamped "Palais Royal" and a shop name in gilt on the inner leather clasp flap, sold for $795. This one hasn't got the shop imprint, but we're certain it is one of the same traveling cases, or 'trouse d' voyage' as they were known, and sure it is definitely of the Palais Royal genre & quality, too. This dates to the mid-late Napoleon III era, and directly to us from France. It is a rich deep green leather outer case, beautifully opening to a layered array of toiletries, implements, and conveniences for the traveler, into a very small and appealing space. Great for display, but you'd almost want to go ahead and use this one. Genuine horn handled brushes, all cleaned and there are several steel implements, too...even a cut crystal timbale or drinking cup (nope, that's not a jar missing its lid, it's actually a cup).
Pristine condition, large belt like strap over the lid and two gilt clasps on the front. Four sterling silver topped cut crystal jars and large cologne or perfume decanters inside. No engraved decoration but all are hallmarked and have tiny diamond shaped maker marks that are either "VD" or "VL". No tatters to the leather case - these originally came with an outer heavy leather protective case, and though this one no longer has it's outer case, it certainly seems to have only recently been separated from it, as it is in excellent condition. Look through all the many photos to see all the fine detail - many contents. WOW! Don't miss the other travel case or necessaire that we're listing today! Thanks!
While on the subject of fine antique boxes, by the way, I MUST mention to you a fabulous newly published reference book by our friend and customer, Genevieve Cummins of Australia. Over the past several years, Genevieve has been working on a masterpiece of a book, which we've just recently received copies of. It's SUPERB! We're pleased to see our own shop noted in many of the pages, and to revisit so many exceptional antique boxes we've had over the years. Some of you who buy antique boxes from us might well see your own in there, as we did share our images often with Genevieve. Be sure to order it. The title is: "ANTIQUE BOXES, Inside and Out". Hot off the presses, it's got 429 delicious pages of boxes. A GREAT HOLIDAY GIFT idea for your antique-loving friends!
