A very unique larger portrait miniature, mid 1700s, protected under convex cover glass inside a burled wood case. Not a snuff box, it is slender and closes over the portrait within. I've never found another cased as this one is. We have a handwritten ID within, if only I could make it out. . "Portrait of Madame Jannin, born ..."
It is not a snuffbox because the box is very flat and closes over the miniature, keeping it pristine with a cover glass held in place with a mat of natural shell. Tthe miniature is inside the box, hidden, and not on the lid as for a snuff box. I've enlarged and tried to enhance the writing in case you can make it out better than I.  In her time, 3/4 portrait set in a landscape was a popular fashion for miniatures. All of my photos are taken through the convex cover glass, as I haven't the courage to pry her out of her 270 year old etui, case. Case is 3 1/8" in diameter and 1/2" thick when closed. Fits tight. Measurements are noted on the photos.

Very good to excellent condition, throughout, age and type considered. Charming painting in a unique protective case of gorgeous old wood, the cover glass intact and unbroken, as is the shell ring that holds it all in place within. No warp or mishaps to report with the wooden case which is made quite similar to the old snuff boxes of the era. Again, not a snuff box. Jannin, in her youth and bonnet - beautifully set for all time.
