The red sash included with this woman's portrait is iconic for those portraits of Royalists in the 10 years or so following The Terror - the beheadings of Royals and elites c.1780s, likely she lost a relative of loved one and her portrait is a visual protest. Likewise, she has an ermine shawl, the narrow fur which wraps her c.1795-1800 gown, and an elaborate lace bonnet. Just a stunning little painting, not signed by its very capable artist. Still housed in the original frame, convex cover glass unbroken over time. If she could only tell you the story of her time! This woman would have lived through much of the most important history of France in 'modern' times. It is likely she is in exile when she had her portrait done. Measurements: Frame is 5" square (wood) and 1/2" in depth, beveled on backside and lathe-turned front, typical of French frames of the era. The painting is 2 5/8" in diameter, and her face is incredible at just 5/8", chin to bonnet.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, The old frame does show some age, but has no wood worm holes or losses. It is original to this painting, as is the convex cover glass. Not a bit of damage to the painting, though you can see the original wafer is blunted at top. Does not show when in her frame and looks as if the wafer was originally that way, it has paint. Someone has sealed the back in this century, but it's also been sliced for access.
