Elegant antique French PUIFORCAT hallmarked sterling silver 4pc open or master salt set with original matching spoons and all in the original fitted storage and/or presentation box! One salt missing its inner glass liner but three remain perfectly usable. Each with a lovely foliage decoration and sinuous Art Nouveau style tendrils winding throughout. All bear the post-1878 French Minerve or Minerva hallmarks, even the spoons. The tiny number â1â within those marks means theyâre all in .950 silver (95% pure so higher than the .925 standard for âsterlingâ silver). The silversmith marks are, of course, for the world renowned House of Puiforcat (EP for Emile Puiforcat) and date to the late 1800s. Known for the finest of finery, Puiforcat is one of only a handful of French silversmiths that have attained worldwide name recognition for their long lauded history and reputation for timeless patterns and unrivaled craftsmanship. Now owned by Hermes, also a name known for opulence.
Founded in Paris in 1820 by Emile Puiforcat and his two cousins. The House of Puiforcat's renown owed to Jean Puiforcat, from the fourth generation of the family, whose efforts resulted in the most beautiful pages of its history almost a century later that would establish the company in the avant-garde of modern silverwork. Driven by his father, louis-Victor Puiforcat, the company began evolving towards the high-end of the silversmithâs trade in the late nineteenth century, recreating eighteenth-century masterpieces from his collection that are now exhibited at the Louvre Museum in Paris. We have a host of superb antique French sterling silver pieces, sets and treasures so, be sure to browse a bit while you're with us. Thanks!
Very good condition. As noted above, there is one glass insert or liner that is missing and there are a few small rim chips on those that remain but no larger chips or cracks. A tiny dimple or two to the silver salts and some age tarnish visible in spots. The box does show signs of its age but is fully intact and has a gilt embossed "LC" monogram on the lid, there is also a retailer stamp on the inside of the lid lining that reads "Ad. Mansard & Fils, Fabricants, Bijoutier, Joaillier, Place Bambetta 14 & R. Porte Dijeaux 115, Bordeaux". See pictures for all measurements.
