Here's a fine set that surprised me a little on the marks I found because I look at this case and think Napoleonic era, but the marks tell us the set is c.1838, probably within a year or two of that date and in the Louis Philippe era. Cut steel pins spell out 'Souvenir' on the lid and decorate it, and the box is beautiful old exotic hardwood that elevates it above many. A little mother of pearl escutcheon around the push-button opener is the only other decorative touch on the case. The fun begins, however, when we open the case and find that it's still filled with all of the sewing items and all original except possibly that bodkin. I think it would have a vermeil bodkin with this set, don't you? And yet, with the mother of pearl spool, it might just be another touch of pearl for the set. The other pieces are, no doubt, original to the set and are resting perfectly in the special recesses made for each piece. A fabulous set, scissors, thimble, stiletto and needle case in superb early 1800s French sterling silver and with 18k gold layer for that 'vermeil' gold imitation. Were these pieces all 18k solid gold, as in the case of many of our other sets, the price goes way up. Here you have the look, but not the price. The spool and bodkin are in fine old mother of pearl and neither has any damage. Quite rare to find the sewing sets complete, remember, down to the original silvered mirror in lid and the chenille trim cording. Both inside and out, a very very nice set.
Very good to excellent for age and type, this one is sure to please. The needle case looks different, but it fits perfectly into the opening specially made for it. As does the stiletto, even though it too might appear to be a different set. Add that thimble that perfectly fits its opening, and you have to figure they all came with the set to start, don't you? And when we investigate the marks, they also are all consistent and the same, down to the odd maker mark. A fabulous and early set, c.1838 or shortly thereafter. Measurements are in the photos.
