Early 20th century at latest, likely c.1890-1920, this exceptionally fun hand carved Black Forest (Swiss) gloves box was likely someone's Grand Tour souvenir. I don't think I've ever seen or found a parrot before, making me wonder if it was a special request. Likewise, painted BF animals and birds are not common. But this glass-eyed green parrot is charming and way too appealing to pass up. It's a large box, fully lined in the original blue silk in that deep tuck/tufted knotted manner. Box is 12.5" x 5" x 8.5" tall.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, with a single flaw notable: there is a chip on one of the feet. Shown and marked in our photos, only visible from sideview and is on a back leg. No other chips, no cracks, no warping. The box has its working lock and original key, as well. Great for a documents box or for wrapped cigars - you name it. Just in from Paris.
