Antique hand carved wood 19.75" tall framed crucifix with a big natural sea shell holy font, c.1870-1900. The carving includes 2 types of wood so there is a contrast of the figure of Christ against the backing which includes his cross. Beautifully crafted and very large as these usually go. The shell dismounts with a long bolt so it can be safely packed for shipment and no chance of damage. Our photos show it well, but it's much more impressive in person due to the size. Folk art carving in the Swiss Alps, Black Forest is the name this type of carving goes by, of course. The shell is 7.5" wide and 4.5" deep, undamaged.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. You can tell it's been hung and treasured. There are no splits, no breaks, no losses to the carved wood. You can see a repeat of the cross up top, and a circle that represents the crown of thorns, all framed in a typical Black Forest branch, leaves and berries motif. Very beautiful. Lies flat with no warp. Hanging apparatus still on back top and ready to hang. All measurements noted on the photos.
