Seldom done, someone has documented the ID and his/her relationship with this 18th-earliest 19th century military portrait, so we know the gentleman in his uniform is a French Marine officer, painted close to 1800 (give or take), and his name was Vidus du Chesne, and uncle of the father of the person who noted the ID on a card backing. An exceptional painting, fine detail in uniform and face, and housed in a superb c.1800 French dore bronze frame with wood mat. Clean cover glass, no damage to the wafer, and the artistry, unsigned, that puts such a likeness in a face only 5/8" from chin to hairline. Full measurements are noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Exquisite small painting, beautifully framed in a 220+ year old easel frame, wood mat trimmed out in dore bronze, as well. From my personal collections of many decades.
