Wonderful antique Victorian era Jennens & Bettridge marked 9 7/8" papier mache casket or box, now a fabulous table top display vitrine for jewelry, portrait miniatures or micro mosaics with clear glass top & mirrored bottom, ornate gold & colored enamel decoration and working lock & key! These wonderful old jewelry boxes made by Jennens & Bettridge in the mid-late 1800s would originally have had an eglomise panel in the lid. A reverse painting, often with mother of pearl appliques, of notable European scenes. This one must have had damage to the eglomise panel, loss of paint, etc., and so it has been replaced with a clear glass and the base of the box lined with a mirror making it a perfect desk or table top vitrine to show off some of your treasured smalls! I was going to show it with several portrait miniatures in it but, the last picture grouping gives you an idea. It also has a lock & key so you can be sure they're kept away from handling. A wonderful piece, don't miss it.
Very good condition. As noted, it would originally have had an eglomise painted glass insert in the lid that's been replaced with clear glass. The mirror in the base is not original and the side panels have been relined in a cream colored moire silk type fabric. One or two small chips to the papier mache box, the left bottom corner for instance. Some slight wear to the gold enamel decoration. See pictures for all measurements.
