Unmounted pair: mid-1800s Italian micro mosaic plaques, Ruins, Rome. Ready to mount in jewelry of your choice. The pair would make a pair of earrings, cufflinks. Onyx or black glass basin with very very fine colored glass tesserae, no loss to mosaic. Large 20mm x 16mm ovals. No chips, no damage, excellent!
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Some time ago I bought an entire collection of unmounted mid-1800s micromosiacs, shell cameos, lava cameos from an auction house. I've decided they've all got to go. This matching pair is spectacular, and not a thing showing as flaw (other than a tiny bit of dust visible in photos, sorry). I love the way artisan/jeweler, Elizabeth Locke, incorporates these antique stones and mosaics into her modern jewelry, but the prices are astronomical. And likewise, buying these now in Italy is way out of sight. Buy yours from us (as the Italian tourist antiques market does) and have it made up to your liking as the Victorian Grand Tour travelers did. Surface is perfectly flat, superb, no cracks, no lifts to the colored glass tesserae, which are terribly tiny. And a wonderful favorite scene, various Roman ruins. Very early, likely c.1830-50. I have many others, being sold separately, including a selection of larger oval architectural plaques that would make up into fabulous pendant or brooch to go with this set as earrings. All shown and sold separately. Ask for help if you don't find them - working at listing them all as fast as I can!
