Absolutely exquisite & rare antique French sterling silver 72pc flatware set, a 6pc table setting for TWELVE with beautifully ornate rococo style pattern with flowers & sinuous foliate tendrils and all in wonderful condition!  Thick & heavy old French sterling silver and the style is undeniably stunning.  Comprehensive!  The set includes a 12/12 service in the larger dinner sized forks & spoons and 12/12 in the entremet or luncheon sizes of each, completed by complimenting knives with ebonized handles and sterling caps & collars. Both the sterling flatware and knives are in a wonderful old French black leather or leatherette & brass storage chest, the boxes both 2-tier with fitted levels to hold all pieces (and the flatware chest has extra room for teaspoons in the top layer, a ladle, tongs and other serving pieces in the bottom layer if you decide to add to the set.  There is also room for six more of each knife size in the knives box.  If you're familiar with French flatware, the dinner sizes are generally larger than those made in England or the states and we generally use the smaller pieces on a day to day basis anyway. Gorgeous! Rococo style seashell shapes framed with what looks like sinuous foliage, perhaps acanthus wrapping around the sides. All pieces bear the French Minerve or Minerva hallmark, the tiny number "1" within those marks means they're in .950 silver (95% pure and higher than the .925 standard for "sterling" silver).  The silversmith marks for Eugene Quell, 1847-1895, (Lapparra Antoine, 1895-1902, successor), "PQ" with a "rame antique", 8 Petite rue Saint-Roch-Poissoniere, Paris. A similar mark was used by Pierre Francois II Quelle, his father and predecessor,1834-1846, "PQ" and a 'rame antique' (though of a slightly different shape), 70 Rue du faubourg-Montmarte, Paris. Highly renowned and Pierre Queille was also known to have done work for the world renowned House of Odiot!  A glorious set, perfect to spruce up your soon to be here Holiday table ensemble. Yes, the Holidays are right around the corner, time to start planning to wow yourself and your guests. Enjoy!

A traditional wedding gift, these magnificent French sterling silver flatware sets were almost always packaged without knives. Why is this? Another French tradition has to do with the gift of knives or a knife as a symbol of the cutting or ending of a relationship. And no where on earth is tradition more important, perhaps, than to the French culture. So, in light of the symbolism of the gift, knives were not part of a wedding gift, not packaged or even usually made with the matching pattern of the forks, spoons in a set, and are something added later and as compliments to the table's sterling silver choice. And ever the center influence in fashion, this also opportuned the happy result of knives made in coordinating and complimenting fashion. The result is that you can add sets of knives to compliment and define your table setting. Extremely fine all, don't miss them! There are also more images available and necessary to fully appreciate the comprehensive nature of the set so, just email and we'll supply them. Thanks!
