An exceptionally fine late 1700s to early 1800s hand painted portrait of a beautiful young woman, French Romantic period masterpiece in only a 3" diameter panel. It's always fascinating to me to see the exquisite detail and personality these artists could capture in a "canvas" so small. Look at the expression of her beautiful face. She is a woman in the period costume and hair fashions of the 1770s Courtiers, and is either a portrait done directly in her time, or perhaps a slightly later painting in miniature done after a full-sized painting of this woman. I don't instantly recognize this work, but it has the look of a portrait by Boucher, Fragonard, Gros or one of the fine painters of the French Romantic era. If you recognize this one, please share info. I'll do some more research, too. The painting is unsigned, so possibly done for early Grand Tour tourist trade. So many thrilling paintings to be enjoyed in the Louvre and other museum collections, and travelers loved having the miniatures of those more famous paintings to take home with them. Whether your interest is in the portrait miniature, or in having art work for your antique doll's house, you're sure to find this one of highest appeal.

Very good condition throughout. No chips or cracks, no hairlines on the panel, and while it is not signed by the artist, it is certainly by a very adept Master. In the heavy dore bronze frame, it is 3.75" in diameter and .5" in depth. Protected still under the original cover glass, it has no warp, either.
