Absolutely exquisite & rare early to mid 1800s antique coromandel ecritoire or writer's box with Gothic style gilt bronze strapping & mother of pearl accents! With the appearance of a pearl jewelled treasure chest, it is indeed a glorious antique box! Entirely veneered in one of the most rare veneers of the era, coromandel, popular for its exotic figured grain! Beautiful! Nice larger size, too, at a full 14" wide and one of the finest that we've had in some time! No maker marks but I'd be surprised if it were not from a prominent English or French maker, Tahan, Betjemann or....? Perfect for desk or writing table display...not to limit it in any way but these all add an undefinable elegance when grouped & displayed!
Very good condition. Amazing, inside & out! The only real flaws with the entire piece are that there is an age split along the very bottom (due to the differential drying shrinkage between the coromandel veneers and base wood panel beneath). The inside is all intact and original, with just the inkwells missing and a split at the fold of the velvet writing surface cover. Oh, there is also a bit of loss to the mother of pearl surrounding the key hole. See pictures for measurements.
