Usually these old carved boxes are much smaller. Interesting to find one 13 1/2" longest, in exceptionally nice condition as far as the carvings, and still with those elegant cabriole legs, the old working lock and its key, still intact. The interior is wide open. I would guess it would have been a sewing box, or perhaps a bride's trousseau chest but it could most certainly become a cigar presentation chest. I've shown the carvings and the hand crafted details.
Very good to excellent for age and type. No real issues of chips or breaks anywhere. If I were to say there's a flaw, I'd have to say that it has apparently been varnished at some point in time. Full measurements are noted on the photos. We would date this one c.1870-1900.
