Elegant antique French Napoleon III era 13" campaign style travel sewing chest with ornate brass & boulle inlay, 1863 "Souvenir" engraved cartouche and opulently appointed interior with vermeil sewing implements, scent or perfume bottle and near pristine condition! Circa mid 1800s, this stunning old ebonized walnut casket, box, coffret with exquisite inlay cartouche that includes an 1863 dated "Souvenir" inscription. And when you open this one up, using the original working key in the working lock, you find it is opulently appointed with the original fittings including a mirror in the lid framed with hand stitched 'curtains' like you'd see in an old French opera house or theater. A lift-out tray in the base holds a faux tortoise shell carnet bal or aide d' memoire, three piece sewing set in 18k gold on sterling silver vermeil including scissors, stiletto and needle case and there's also a fabulous old wheel cut ruby glass & silver perfume vial (this one not original but a treasure itself). A lidded compartment in the front and space for other sewing or vanity items beneath the sewing implements tray. Truly stunning inside & out!
Very good condition for age and type. As noted above. The outer box is 13 1/8" x 9 3/8" and it is 5.25" tall when closed, it weighs a heavy 5 lbs, 7 oz. (2.5kg) with contents. Working key with the box. There are some dark spots to the mirror's silvering and a few interior flaws but, as you can see, it's truly spectacular. The carnet bal and scent bottle are likely replacements but it is sometimes difficult to tell what is and what is not original in these compendiums. Missing the thimble and small needle or bodkin. The exterior of the box is in wonderful shape with no missing inlays and just light surface marking as you would expect with a piece of its age. A treasure inside & out!
