Fabulous antique French Napoleon III era Palais Royal marked hand carved mother of pearl carnet du bal or dance card & coin purse pair, ornate decoration with solitary "U" monograms and fine condition! A few flaws here but what a wonderful pair! Just in from France, the covers on both, front and back, are in solid shimmering mother of pearl. The fronts of each with an ornate carved decoration and large medallion with what looks like a "U" monogram. The interiors with the original tan moire silk or satin linings, the carnet du bal with a center pencil holder and two pockets, the coin purse with baffled interior and center clasped pocket. The gold embossed label in the carnet du bal is mostly legible and appears to read "S. Appry, 175-176 Palais Royal". There are remnants of the gold embossed marking inside the coin purse but it's not legible. A lovely pair, don't miss them!
Good to very good condition, age considered. There are corner chips to the fronts of both pieces, what appears to be a hairline crack in the coin purse facade just over the monogram. The interiors are a bit soiled but far less than you would expect. One side baffle on a pocket of the carnet du bal has a small tear, some wear to the linings of the coin purse.
