Fabulous & rare 11pc set of antique English Edwardian era sterling silver vanity items in the Reynolds Angels pattern of winged cherub figures & flowers in bas relief! I found this set while in Phoenix recently and it is one that has been patiently acquired over years of collecting by the original owner. It consists of a rare 11.5" tray, two hand mirrors, three brushes, a comb, three vanity jars with facet or hobnail cut crystal bodies and even a pin cushion casket!! WOW! All with the same Reynold's Angels motif though some of the pieces have a slightly different arrangement and there are three silversmith marks I believe. All dating between 1901-1911 with some made by each of the following silversmiths : William Neele of Chester, Jones & Crompton of Birmingham and I haven't found the third. The pattern stems from the painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) and is referred to as "Reynolds Angels" or "Angels Heads". The unusual painting depicts five studies of the head of Lady Frances Isabella Keir Gordon, five year old daughter of Frances Ingram and her husband, Lord William Gordon. The work was begun in summer 1786 and that fifth study was added to the painting in March of the following year. The image became particularly popular in the late Victorian to early Edwardian era and was copied in all sorts of items, decorative objects and, as you see here, sterling boxes & vanity items. A beautiful set, rare in the comprehensive nature and truly a labor of love evidenced in the years taken to amass it. Don't miss them!
Very good condition. The tray is pristine. There are dimples on some pieces, the lids of the jars in particular and it looks like the comb may have a replaced teeth portion. Bristles on the brushes are at least 90% intact. There is some wear to the velvet nap on the pin cushion piece and just a slight bit of darkening in a spot to the smaller hand mirror's mirror insert. Finally, one of the smaller vanity jars has a glued break to the crystal body but there are no missing pieces from the break. Some age evident but to be expected. See pictures for all measurements.
