Impressive & rare antique Victorian era Black Forest hand carved 18.25" tall mantel clock with ornate foliate decoration and three hunt motif stag or deer figures and original candlestick or epergne stand garniture pair, also with deer figures under overhanging branches & foliage! WOW, isn't this set fantastic! Exactly what comes to mind when you think of the fine old museum quality Black Forest clock & garniture sets, isn't it. Beautiful, highly ornate foliate carving throughout all three pieces and the style is as attractive as they come. The clock case with an attached base or plinth bringing the total height to an impressive 18 1/4". The upper portion of the case, consisting of those gorgeous vines or branches, leaves & majestic stag figures, two at the top and one in a running position below. Everything above the base "plinth" wood panels on all three has been carved from large solid blocks of what is surely Linden wood. Just imagine the painstakingly long process of getting from such a large block of wood to what you see here in that magnificent clock case. Amazing! The detail and artistry are superb. Some flaws, as you would expect with a 100+ year old wooden clock but the overall visual and decorative appeal are undeniable. A rare, beautiful complete 3pc set, don't miss it!
Very good condition, age & materials in mind. As you can see, and as one would expect, there are some chips to the horn or antler and ear tips, possible small nips here and there to leaf tips but all three in overall wonderful shape. The clock face has a darkened mark but no damage or chips, etc. to the convex round enamel numerals plaques. It's a single wind so there is no chime. The clock mechanism appears to have been recently oiled serviced, it's as clean as can be. Usually we see these with Japy Freres movements but this one is only marked with numbers. It does run but we've not monitored it for duration or accuracy. These old movements do also sometimes get jostled a bit in shipment so you may want to take it to a clock repair shop when you receive it to have it adjusted again so it'll be in tip top working order. Looking at it from the back, you can see that there would have been a wood panel, hinged at the bottom with the hinge still there but the panel has gone missing over the years. Finally, there is an old glue repaired break to the front of the base/plinth to the right side garniture piece, it does stand steady with no wobble and is really only noticeable from the bottom.
