RARE and wonderful, late 1700s travel kit, the type used by dignitaries, military officers, and the earliest Grand Tour travelers, to store and carry the essential implements of la toilette, grooming. This one has the most supple fine old leather you'll ever fine. Gold embarrassed, it has held up remarkably well and appears to be kid leather, very soft and pliable even now, more than 200 years later. I'm such a traveler, I always love seeing (and owning) these old kits and wondering where they've traveled and in whose care. A pair or razors, tooth scraper, file and scalpel (typical in the military kits, who often had to do surgery on themselves in the war campaign, remember - sew up a wound). The old shaving brush and scissors and the leather sheath for the scalpel remain with the kit, too. A couple of pots would have fit into the drawer that is worked into the main body of the kit, but they are no longer with this one. Also missing would be the leather or cloth strapping with which the case would have been held closed after rolling it as we have. You can see the slit into which such stringing would have fit and it would be simple to put in a replacement if you can find a suitable old cloth ribbon. The brilliantly dyed red and green leathers are so gorgeous on this kit. And it's definitely a museum piece just as it is. Be sure to look at our other historic Trousse de voyage items, sets. They're wonderful decorative items for a dressing room, vanity table top.

Very good condition for age and type. The leather is outstanding, very well preserved. A movie prop candidate for sure. The set dates over 200 years old and still has many of the original implements, all of which have been thoroughly sanitized, by the way. Pull-out drawer has covered compartments for potted unguents and or bandages, other vanity items.
