Fabulous & rare antique French Napoleon III era Palais Royal gilded bronze ormolu & mother of pearl boat or sailboat shaped casket, likely an early sewing etui with highly unique foliate framed mirrrored base! Okay, so it's not a sailboat, more like a tall ship, complete with two masts, tiny wire riggings and two mother of pearl sails! Very unique, this is the first that we've EVER seen with a mirrored base! Normally they have a larger half shell or even the bronze wiring as the base, this one with a vine & foliate framework and thick beveled mirror making it even that much more attractive. It actually came to us from Europe with a small oval velvet inner panel that would have held the tiny sewing implements, the implements gone so we photographed it without the lining but can included it for the new owner if requested. Shimmering mother of pearl half shells create the little casket, gilt ormolu flags waving overhead and the sails shaped as if bulging in the wind. Lovely!
Very good-excellent condition. Some age tarnish visible here & there and a spot or two on the mirror (dark spots on the bottom silvering) but no breaks or repairs to note. Possibly a tiny chip on the forward sail edge, if I'm seeing that correctly in the images, but nothing to take away from the overall visual appeal. See pictures for measurements.
