Absolutely magnificent & rare antique Victorian era hand carved solid oak 24" & 18" furniture or architectural cornice or "fronton" PAIR, large seashell shaped finials or crowns with exquisite siren style putti, cherub or baby grotesque figures! Most likely 18th c. to early 19th century Italian (though possibly earlier), the carvings are beautifully composed and crafted. Sculptures of the finest detail & quality. I would half expect to see this one in the Medici Palace in Florence. I am always drawn to carved architectural panels and use them in my own homes as decorative wall hangings, new faces or crowns built into cabinetry. This pair is just waiting for me to figure out how and where I can put it to use. But in the meantime, they're open to purchase. The rich carving includes the outer shell shaping of the cornices themselves but centers on those magnificent figures. Definitely an aquatic them, each is holding a fish in one hand and rope or netting on the other arm. The torsos morph into twin dolphin tails instead of legs and I simply cannot emphasize the exquisite detail enough, just breathtaking! Heavy, solid old European oak, the pair have a total weight of twelve pounds or 5.44 kilograms! Glorious, rare, don't miss them!
Excellent condition. As pristine as can be, just as you see them in our photos. Possibly a tiny nip or two but both in superb condition. Note that while they are a matched pair, they are not the same size, one is 24" and the other 18" wide. See pictures for all measurements.
