Set of 8 early to mid-1800s ivory drafting or mapping rulers stored in a fitted wooden box made sometime later than the rulers. "J T Melville" and "Halden & Co Manchester & London" rulers among them. The box is mid-1800s, dovetailed construction with brass cartouche and escutcheon with a lock but we do not have a key. Engineer's set, perhaps architect. I've owned these for a good 20 years. Disbursing my own collections.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, no breaks and well-preserved. Box is solidly made and crafted to last, which it has. One ruler has a darker coloration to the ivory, natural. Rare set, we do not know to whom they originally belonged.
