Fabulous & rare antique Victorian era English or French papier mache sewing, vanity & jewelry chest or cabinet with ornate hand painted floral front & sides, mother of pearl inlays and unique cathedral or tomb scene on top! Wow, I just love this style of papier mache chest, cabinet style with a domed lid covering a fitted upper that would have been meant for spools & sewing items. Two doors in the front that open to three empty upper drawers and an opulently fitted bottom drawer with spaces for jewelry and even a pocket watch at the center. This one shows its age a bit more than the last of this style we had, with some chipped corners, some filled areas and missing the original locks but you simply can't deny the overall visual & decorative appeal! A remarkable piece even with the flaws and that fabulous cathedral or tomb scene on top is quite rare. The windows in mother of pearl and all. A museum piece with some restoration, don't miss it!
Good, as noted, condition. I've tried to show most of the flaws, chips and current restorations so look at the pictures. There is some loss to the hand painted decoration but mostly in the areas where the painting is over the mother of pearl (due to the smooth surface of the pearl and really only adds to the appeal. The locks are both missing but the front doors stay closed without. There are also two carved mother of pearl drawer pulls missing from two drawers. Large & heavy, it weighs 9 lbs, 4 oz. See pictures for all measurements.
